Biography

Hosein Shokouh-Amiri, Director of Liver and pancreas Transplant Program and Co-Director of Transplant Center at John C. McDonald Regional Transplant Center, Shreveport LA. Clinical professor of surgery at LSU.

I received my Medical Degree from Pahlavi University Medical School, Shiraz, Iran in 1976. I started surgical training in Iran, but due to political reasons moved to Denmark in 1980, where I finished my general surgery residency, and subspecialty in gastrointestinal and transplant surgery and started my life-long passion of working on pancreas transplant techniques. I was instrumental in establishing the second liver transplant program in Denmark and became the first Vice President of Denmark’s Transplant Society. I have been instrumental and pioneer in the success of the technique of portal enteric pancreas transplant.

My areas of expertise are in Transplantation with special interest in pancreas, liver and kidney, and management of hepato-pancreato-biliary pathology.

My utmost achievement is the Ellis Island Medal of Honor that I received in 2006. I received the Best Teaching Faculty of the Year at LSUHSC, Shreveport 2009. I have published close to 200 scientific papers, more than 13 book chapters and have given numerous talks nationally and internationally. I have carried out various voluntary trips to Egypt and Iran trying to establish living related adult to adult liver transplant and pancreas transplant programs. I did the first liver transplant in Mashhad, Iran and first pancreas transplant in Tehran, Iran. I am closely collaborating with the largest transplant program in Shiraz, Iran. All of these with all of my own expenses, without the involvement of Iranian government. I have done several trips to Honduras to do different types of surgeries & educate the local team there.

Special Interest

I am the governor of Louisiana Chapter of American College of Surgeons, Board member of Louisiana Organ Procurement Organization and American Foundation for Donation and Transplantation. President of Tennessee Transplant Society in 2001-2002 and chair of International Relation Committee AHPBA/IHPBA. I have been president of Iranian American Medical Association for 2 consecutive period (4 years) and its CME committee chair for 12 years.

During Covid pandemic, I did a very successful fundraising to more than $500,000 to buy the needed supplies for Iranian patients without government involvement. The last fundraising, I did was $1,055,000 to buy a very advanced CT scanner to help diagnose the covid patient and treat accordingly for Abu Ali Sina Transplant Hospital in Shiraz, Iran.
