To: The Persian American Medical Association (PAMA);
As part of the humanitarian mission of PAMA, again this year from September 21 to September 28, we on behalf of AHPBA (Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association) together with the World Surgical Foundation and the Persian American Medical Association (PAMA) took another humanitarian trip to San Pedro Sula in Honduras. This year, we worked in 2 different hospitals, Catarina Rivas, which is the second largest hospital in the country, and the Leonardo hospital. Our main job in Catarina Rivas was mainly educationally performing complicated surgeries. We did several HPB surgeries including Whipple procedure and liver resections, which were perceived enthusiastically by many oncology surgeons. We did 190 surgeries, including 11 neurosurgical procedures, 28 complicated pediatric surgeries, 6 plastic surgeries, 8 HPB surgeries, 92 gallbladder & hernia operations, assisted to 44 pediatric surgeries, and 1 endocrine surgery. Our group included 5 general surgeons, 2 pediatric surgeons, 2 plastic surgeons, 1 neurosurgeon, 2 HPB surgeons, 1 dentist, 3 residents, 4 PA’s, 5 medical students, 2 nurses, 2 anesthesiologists and 6 ancillary personnel. From Shreveport, 2 HPB & endocrine surgeons were present, and one PA from our center attended the trip.
From PAMA, Dr. Hosein Shokouh-Amiri and Dr. Solomon Shokouh-Amiri (dentist) were representing PAMA. Dr. Solomon Shokouh-Amiri started the Dental Mission Group this year. All and any PAMA members(s) are truly encouraged and are welcome to join us as you will definitely enrich our humanitarian trips to the under privileged countries. If you are interested in joining PAMA’s humanitarian mission, please contact me at: hshokouhamiri@pama.ngo
Few pictures from our participants, Whipple procedures, removal of a giant pheochromocytoma, large renal cell carcinoma among other procedures are included. Most of the cholecystectomies were performed laparoscopically. My hospital donated a Book Walter and many surgical instruments. The World Surgical Foundation has donated 4 laparoscopic towers among other donations. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Hosein Shokouh-Amiri, M.D., FACS, FICS, TACC

The PERSIAN AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (“PAMA”) was formed to address a need for cohesive action on the part of physicians (allopathic and osteopathic), dentists and other medical scientists, of Iranian origin (as hereafter defined), residing in the north America (the “United States and Canada”).
The PAMA was also formed to maintain the identity of this group of people, to provide a forum for scientific, educational, cultural, and charitable interaction amongst its members and Iran. The term “Iranian Origin” is used throughout the Bylaws in an ethnic sense regardless of birthplace and is meant exclusively to pertain to those whose ancestry, in whole or in part derives from Iran
